Situated in the historical part of the building, these luxury rooms facing around a central gallery, have large windows, intricate cornices, exceptional ceilings, panelling and other wonderful architectural features from bygone days.
Our brief was to create a design that retained the grandeur associated with the hotel, but one of understated luxury using subtle palettes.
The original rooms featured a mix of traditional and old fashioned brocades, damasks, swags and drapes that both obscured the light and made the rooms feel suffocating.
We reconfigured the rooms spatially for a more convivial guest experience. They were opened up with simple, elegant window treatments in keeping with the new theme. To showcase the outstanding views from floor to ceiling windows, we used fabrics and wall-coverings to work with the abundance of natural light.
Four Posters bed are a pre-requisite for rooms of this nature. The original beds were of dark timber with heavy drapes that dominated the space and blocked the views. Replacing them with timber “Pencil” beds effectively retaining the four poster elements – but in a more modern, simple and elegant way. The Bridal Suite has an ornate bespoke gilt four poster with classic drapes complementing the light filled room.
New carpeting was laid throughout the rooms and the gallery using a bespoke design of fresh colour tufts, giving a classic, fresh look.
The chandeliers are a major feature of the Gallery area and are effective in their simplicity, yet not overly ornate. This classic, simple lighting theme is carried through into bedrooms with a mix of floor, wall and desk lamps.
All bathrooms were reconfigured to provide guests with the best possible showering experience amongst elements of classic marble, glass, brass-ware, feature tiles and stylish vanity units. Walls were repositioned or removed to make the most of the bathroom space. Generous luxury walk in showers replaced mean-sized baths in smaller rooms. In larger rooms, space permitting, a separate bath and shower was provided, whilst the bridal rooms have feature copper bath-tubs.
This project reached the finals of Northern Design Awards 2016 in the Hotel Interiors Category.
